HOLY HUNCHES: Responding To The Promptings Of God. Main, Bruce. 156p, paper, Baker 2007, 978-0-8010-6803-4, $13.99 [248.4]
Bruce Main believes that the "hunch" is an unfortunately overlooked theological loci. This word helps Christians understand what occurs when they are called to go in a God-inspired direction. Main writes, "The faithful acts of ordinary people create a space where the miraculous occurs" (33). Main's book adds to explorations he began in Spotting the Sacred: Noticing God in the Most Unlikely Places. In the first story, two professional chemists drive from the Midwest to New Jersey to teach the last week of school at an alternative high school. They use their vacation time for the trip, bring their own equipment, and cover their own expenses. It's like a modern-day Abraham and Sarah call story, but inspired by a hunch. Later chapters narrate what it looks like when hunches work together, examine the obstacles, and set out a pattern for listening to our hunches based in Scripture, discernment, and stumbling spontaneity. Though about vocation and calling, the book uses a word closer to popular and spoken English to make its case. A great read! Rating: 4—CS (Clint Schnekloth)
